July 2009 Hockey Tips:

How much ice time do I need over the off season?

Answer: There is no right or wrong answer, but there is a way to maximize the time, effort and money spent.

Fact: A combination of on and off ice training will aid in muscle memory for the upcoming season.

Make the most of the ice time you have scheduled:

  • There a a lot of options for hockey players these days. Weekend camps, week long camps, 4 0n 4 and 5 on 5 games to name a few. Whatever it is you decide to do, make sure your player is getting good instruction and learning skills that will help them out in the long run.

Do your homework and select a training location or training coaches that will help with skills that are lacking.

  • Search for a location or coach that promotes fun while learning utilizing small group sessions and a lot of hockey specific skills. Also, if a player has a tough time skating backwards you would not want to get them into a league that just plays games. The player would be better suited by having small group instruction that focuses on the specifics of skating. View our skating tips for some tricks of the trade.

Let the player help with the decision on what to participate in.

  • It will not do the player or the parent any good to sign up for something they are not happy with. If friends are participating in something the player wants to do let them, but ask the player what they want to achieve. This will help yourself and the player understand what it is that they are gaining from the experience.

Hang up the skates and do other things.

  • It is OK to spend time playing other sports. Players will not "pass you up." If anything playing other sports will make the player more excited about playing hockey again. Spending time in other sports will also help in developing overall athleticism, confidence, and difference game situations that may apply to hockey.

Invest in tools that the player can use at home to aid in skill development.

  • Players can spend time enjoying summer activities while improving their skills. At home hockey training aids will challenge players to improve skills in ways that schools can't teach. By having easy access to various hockey training equipment players can spend 15 - 30 minutes a day on a specific hockey skill instead of wasting 2 - 4 hours of their day attending camps and clinics.
